Thank You for Making the 2025 Unity Benefit Unforgettable
The 2025 Unity Benefit, presented by PACCAR and the Heyday Fund, was a powerful evening that brought our community together in support of NAAM’s mission. At a time when our society faces deep divides and urgent challenges, this record-breaking night was a testament to the courage, generosity, and belief that truth still matters — a belief alive in our community today. Together, in the legacy of giants like the late Dr. Quintard Taylor, who was honored during the ceremony, we took a stand to say Black history, art, and culture matter and are not optional, but essential to the American story.
That spirit of courage guided the evening and inspired every moment. Miss Josephine Howell’s moving performance of “Stand Up” reminded us all of the strength it takes to rise. Nia-Amina Minor delivered a striking performance of Occurrence #8, Part 1, choreographed by 2025 Champion of Unity Donald Byrd, whose words reminded us that despite the pressures and expectations placed on Black artists, they continue to thrive, share their stories, and practice courage every day. Fellow Champion of Unity Ezra Teshome reflected on just how powerful this community is — a community that has stood by the museum since before its inception in 2008. The evening was made even more meaningful by Selome and Hewan Teshome, whose heartfelt introduction of their father added warmth and grace, by Vivian Phillips, whose introduction of Donald Byrd highlighted his tremendous impact, by Nick Hailey, NAAM Board Member, who led Raise the Paddle with energy and generosity, and by Tiernan Madorno, who served as emcee and kept the program lively and engaging. Each person’s contribution shaped the night and reminded us of the power of coming together in support of NAAM’s mission.
This gathering was both a tribute and a call: to honor the sacrifice and strength of those who shaped history, to uplift artists whose work sparks social change, and to join NAAM in advancing this legacy. To everyone who attended, celebrated, and “raised a paddle,” thank you — your support allows us to continue moving forward together!
