Celebrate the life and legacy of Benjamin Banneker, the brilliant mathematician, astronomer, and inventor, at this special Freedom Day celebration. Enjoy an expanded Benjamin Banneker Math Room with interactive puzzles and games, free Trophy Cupcakes (while supplies last), and hands-on learning experiences that make math fun for all ages.

Participate in our special activities and workshops designed to inspire learning, dialogue, and empowerment for families and educators:

Math Standards and Resources for Guardians and Families with Akin Alston

1–2 PM | Designed for Families and Educators

  • Join us for an engaging session designed to help families and educators confidently navigate today’s math learning landscape. This workshop will guide participants in finding and using trusted resources that align with school standards, making it easier to support students’ success at home and in the classroom. Together, we’ll explore practical tools and community supports that make math learning more accessible and empowering for everyone.

Math Learning for Students with Learning Challenges with Roderic Walton

2–3 PM | Designed for Families and Educators

  • Every learner can thrive in math with the right tools and support. This interactive session focuses on effective strategies for teaching and reinforcing math concepts for students with learning challenges. Families and educators will gain insights into inclusive teaching practices, adaptive resources, and ways to foster confidence and joy in math learning for all students.

Social Justice Through Math Instruction with Monique Harrison

3–4 PM | Designed for Families and Educators

  • Explore how mathematics can be a powerful tool for liberation, truth-telling, and empowerment for Black students. This session introduces participants to Building Thinking Classrooms strategies and social justice–centered lessons that bring relevance and critical consciousness into math learning. Families and educators will leave inspired with new ways to connect math instruction to real-world issues, affirm identity, and nurture empowered thinkers and problem solvers.
