Freedom Day at NAAM

  • Northwest African American Museum 2300 South Massachusetts Street Seattle, WA, 98144 United States (map)

On May 3, we celebrate Freedom Day—commemorating the landmark 1948 Supreme Court decision Shelley v. Kraemer, a turning point in the legal battle against housing discrimination in the United States. This case wasn’t just about a single family or a single home. It was about who gets to belong—and who gets to build a future—in America.

Learn more about this landmark case here.

During Freedom Day, join us from 3:00PM - 5:30PM for an empowering afternoon dedicated to learning the history and supporting the future of Black homeownership! We’ll kick things off with a powerful presentation from the UW Racial Restrictive Covenant Project, where you’ll gain valuable insight into how historical discriminatory housing practices have shaped — and continue to impact — homeownership in Seattle.

Then, we’ll dive into “Homeownership 101” with Anzhane Slaughter, founder of Young Black Homeowners and The Black Equity Ball.
