NAAM’s Freedom Weekend celebrates the 60th anniversary of the historic civil rights March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. In 2023, we partnered with the MLK Commemoration Committee to honor the historic 1963 March on Washington with three days of free events.

The theme is Dream Unfinished: Not a Commemoration, but a Continuation.

Youth Day | Day #1

Saturday, August 26th | 10AM - 5PM

FIRST DAY: We hosted a youth and young adult (12-25) opportunity and resource fair. We heard uplifting words from our future leaders, learned more about career opportunities including various vocational paid training applications, trade unions, paid apprenticeship programs and so much more. We also hosted a talent show with brunch/lunch included. This was a FREE event for the entire community to enjoy.

Film Festival & March | Day #2

Sunday, August 27th | 11AM - 5PM

SECOND DAY: We hosted an all-day film festival where we watched movies about the March on Washington and history of those who fought for freedom. See below for an itinerary of the movies that were played and when. Everyone then joined us for a march & rally to commemorate the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The March will started at NAAM at 3PM and ended at MLK Jr. Memorial Park.

Community Panel | Day #3

Monday, August 28th | 5:30PM

THIRD DAY: The final day of Freedom Weekend, the MLK Commemoration Committee hosted a community panel discussion at NAAM. The panel reflected on the progress made and not yet achieved, the importance of inspiring change, how we can empower our future, and explored methods of building a just society. Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell was in attendance as we heard from a panel comprised of community leaders, including labor and elected officials. A Q&A followed allowing attendees to ask questions or make comments.
