The works presented in You’re Not From Around Here, Are You? examine the complex, multifaceted experiences of Black folks in the Pacific Northwest. In a genre-crossing collection of collages, altered books and sculptures, the exhibit explores place and space as a marker of Black identity. The pieces on display further grapple with the hyper-visibility of Black bodies, and the notion of racial authenticity in overwhelmingly white spaces. In her exhibit, artist Lisa Myers Bulmash asks audiences to consider the ways in which African-American racial identities are both influenced by and bound to the Northwest.
