April 2010

Dear Friends,

I am thrilled to tell you that NAAM's newest exhibition, After Hours – The Joint is Jumpin,' is a big hit. Highlighting the Northwest's swinging jazz scene from the late 1930s to the early 1950s, this entertaining and interactive show is now open for all to enjoy. Curating this exhibition gave me the chance to meet, and learn from, some of the key history makers and memory keepers in our community. I was fortunate enough to hear Ernestine Anderson recount the night she hid under a dressing room table to avoid a police raid, Buddy Catlett share stories of his days on the road with an unruly Louis Armstrong, and Dave Holden describe the time he heard the music of Ray Charles drift out the doors of a nightclub on Jackson Street while on his early morning paper route. I invite each and every one of you to see After Hours and discover the ways in which the performers, nightclubs, personalities and roaring music of this era forever altered the rhythms of the Pacific Northwest.

One of the benefits of becoming a member of NAAM is that you get to see our exhibitions before they open to the public. Last Friday night our Legacy Gallery was packed with members who enjoyed an exclusive preview of After Hours -- I hope you were there! If you are already a member of NAAM please encourage your neighbors and/or family to join – or give them the gift of a NAAM membership. We have recently lowered the cost of membership so more families and friends can become NAAM members without emptying their wallets. Please join or renew today and help us grow our membership in 2010.

Our annual campaign begins this month and I hope you will contribute and help ensure NAAM's financial success. Double your impact by donating now – every dollar you give will be matched by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation up to $100,000 in 2010.

Please visit us soon and experience NAAM in our 3rd year!
