NAAM YOUTH DOCENT/CURATOR EXHIBIT OPENING

In partnership with the Seattle Youth Employment Program, NAAM is proud to announce the Exhibit Opening of the first annual Youth Docent/Curator Program. A group of talented and dedicated teens have spent the past five months behind the scenes at NAAM, exploring the museum world. They have now designed an inspirational exhibit that shares the stories of their personal experiences. This is a wonderful opportunity for our community to engage with and better understand the lives of our youth: their dreams, accomplishments, passions, hopes and concerns. Following a short program, the youth docents will provide guided tours of their exhibition. This exhibition will run from July 4, 2008-August 31, 2008.

GALLERY TALK WITH ART HISTORIAN: SUSAN NOYES PLATT

Susan Noyes Platt has been working at the James W. Washington., Jr. House and Foundation for two years as an art historian and grant writer. She recently received a Smithsonian visiting fellowship to go to Washington, D.C. in order to study the James W. Washington archives which the artist donated in 1984. Her article based on those archives will appear in the fall in the Archives of American Art Journal. Her lecture will present an overview of the work of James Washington, based on the works on exhibition at the Northwest African American Museum. She will emphasize his dramatic rise from self-taught artist in Gloster, Mississippi in the time of Jim Crow to celebrated internationally known painter and sculptor based in Seattle. The lecture will place his work in the context of his philosophy of art, as well as in the context of his community experiences, including the government art projects of the 1930s, the NAACP, and the Northwest art community.

Born in New York City, Susan Noyes Platt moved to Seattle in 1998. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Texas, Austin. She was a professor of art history at Mills College, Washington State University, and the University of North Texas. Since moving to the Northwest she has taught at the University of Washington, The Evergreen State College, and Seattle Central Community College. She is currently working on a book, Art and Politics Now: Cultural Activism in a Time of Crisis, expected date of publication 2009. Her website is www.artandpoliticsnow.com and her blog is http://artandpoliticsnow.blogspot.com/

Reservations are suggested. Please call NAAM, at 206-518-6000, ext 103.

NAAM READING SERIES: ANDREW WARD’S THE SLAVE’S WAR (Houghton Mifflin)

Join Andrew Ward for a reading from his most recent book, The Slave’s War: the Civil War in the Words of Former Slaves (Houghton Mifflin). “A riveting book about the most important event in our history, from the perspective of those most affected by its outcome. In this most readable and compelling of narratives, the most neglected participants, and their ancient and honorable struggle, are in the foreground where they should be-an antidote to all the mythologizing that has over the years smothered this moral tale.” Ken Burns

All readings are followed by book signings.
